About us and what we do

Since 1981, OHA has engaged residents, policymakers, elected officials and others in exploring strategies to preserve Oakland’s irreplaceable cultural, natural, and architectural heritage. Activities sponsored by the organization focus largely on educational, outreach, and advocacy programs.

  • Walking Tours

Each summer our award winning walking tours introduce hundreds of people to Oakland’s diverse architectural, cultural and natural heritage. These tours bring history alive and help people explore Oakland’s vibrant and history-filled neighborhoods.

  • Partners in Preservation Awards

Each year, to honor those who are helping preserve Oakland’s history, whether it is the restoration of homes and commercial buildings, serving as preservation advocates, or preserving an important cultural heritage, OHA presents its annual Partners in Preservation Awards.

  • Online Lecture Series

Our lecture series brings outstanding preservationists, historians, architects, and cultural leaders to discuss important preservation issues with members and the public.

  • Your Voice for Preservation Action

OHA advocates on your behalf for the protection of Oakland’s architectural, natural, and cultural resources.

  • Linda Taylor

    BOARD MEMBER

I have lived in Oakland for almost 30 years. In 2001 I purchased a 1908 Craftsman cottage near Piedmont Avenue and soon found out during a visit to the Building Department that it was a (semi) historic house. That revelation changed my life. I ran upstairs to the Historic Research Survey Department where Betty Marvin dropped what she was doing and spent two hours going through files and educating me about the history of my house. The next trip was to the History Room of the Library, then I joined OHA.
