2005 Partners in Preservation Awards

The Oakland Heritage Alliance seeks nominations for its 2005 Partners in Preservation Awards, which recognizes outstanding achievements in historic preservation in Oakland. The awards honor Oakland citizens, organizations, projects, and programs whose works demonstrate a commitment to excellence in historic preservation. Application forms are available from the Oakland Heritage Alliance website: www.oaklandheritage.org or by calling 510.763.9218.

Completed nomination packets for the 2005 Oakland Heritage Alliance Partners in Preservation Awards must be received by Friday, September 30, 2005. Preservation award winners will be notified of their awards no later than October 28, 2005. All winners will be honored at a special Partners in Preservation Awards ceremony held in November 2005.

OHA seeks nominations in the following categories:

Architectural projects: These include restoration, rehabilitation, adaptive use projects that respect the original character of an historic structure. Also, appropriate new construction or infill projects in a historically sensitive site or designated district. Nominations may include residential, commercial, and industrial buildings, multiple-dwelling properties, cultural landscapes and maritime properties.

Individuals: Those whose efforts, whether professional or volunteer, contribute to the preservation of Oakland’s historic resources.

Cultural projects or programs: Civic, cultural, neighborhood and environmental efforts that help preserve Oakland’s cultural heritage and natural environment.

Other: This category includes media campaigns, newsletters and publications, and websites that successfully promote historic preservation and/or serve as a catalyst for community and neighborhood action that preserves Oakland’s historic and cultural resources.

Applications for awards will be accepted only for activities completed within the last three years.

Anyone interested in making a nomination will be asked to provide basic information about the project and must include a brief statement that describes the person or project being nominated.

Begun ten years ago, the Partners in Preservation Awards acknowledges the outstanding efforts of residents, property owners, architects, developers and organizations to enhance Oakland for all. It celebrates projects that help preserve Oakland’s culture and history. It rewards projects downtown and in the neighborhoods, architectural preservation and rehabilitation projects, and ongoing cultural events.

In 2004, Partners in Preservation Awards were given for the following: Mary A. Bowles Building façade restoration by Komorous-Towey architects; Oakmore Stairs rehabilitation by the Oakmore Homes Association and City of Oakland; Durant Marketplace rehabilitation (Flynn Craig & Grant Architects); and residential rehabilitation projects for three Oakland residences. Receiving awards for cultural programs were the Uptown Chinatown project, "Rising from the Rails" panel and tour, Museum of African American Technology Science Village, the Oakland Living History Project of Mills College, and Harbor House Ministries. Laura Ingram, Richard Geitzen and Stanley Meikle received lifetime commitment awards and preservationist Jane Powell was acknowledged for her preservation advocacy work.

Oakland Heritage Alliance is a not-for-profit membership organization dedicated to the preservation of Oakland’s architecturally and historically significant structures and sites. This year, OHA celebrate 25 years of working to preserve, protect and promote Oakland’s architectural, cultural and environmental resources.
