Thursdays at Chapel of the Chimes Lecture Series

January 10th Lecture: Susan Dinkelspiel Cerny will discuss her latest book, An Architectural Guidebook to San Francisco and the Bay Area. Written and photographed by Cerny and twelve Bay Area experts, it discusses transportation systems, city and suburban landscape plans, public parkland, California history, and economic, social, and political influences. Included are San Francisco Victorians, civic buildings, churches, parks, grand Period Revivals, and rustic Arts and Crafts homes, as well as significant vernacular buildings in less publicized neighborhoods and towns. The author,  an architectural historian, has published numerous articles on Berkeley and the Bay Area's architectural history. The author of Berkeley Landmarks, she is a past president of the Berkeley Architectural Heritage Association, and a former chair of Berkeley 's Landmarks Preservation Commission.

February 14th Lecture: Tile expert and collector Riley Doty was a major contributor to the book California Tile: The Golden Era 1910-1940, (Schiffer, 2004). In this lecture, Riley and fellow historian Joe Taylor argue that a second golden era is currently underway. The lecture is illustrated by images of significant installations from the Middle Ages to the present and a selection of contemporary and historic art tiles.

March 13th Lecture: OHA member and landscape architect Chris Pattillo talks about the Historic American Landscape Survey (HALS) a new program that recognizes and documents our nation's historic and cultural landscapes. Modeled on the long-standing HABS and HAER programs, HALS is co-sponsored by the National Park Service, Library of Congress and the American Society of Landscape Architects. Chris will describe the activities of the Northern California chapter of HALS and show slides of 3 sites they are actively engaged in documenting. Chapter membership is open to anyone seriously interested in historic landscape preservation.

April 10th Lecture: The American Institute of Architects presents a discussion of historic preservation from the architect's perspective. This joint AIA/OHA event will feature local architects at work and promises to be of interest to both architects and lay people alike who are passionate about Oakland and its built history.

May 8th: Our annual Partners in Preservation event is OHA's opportunity to celebrate and display the best work in architectural, historic and cultural preservation that has appeared in Oakland during the past year. Each award-winning project is presented in words and pictures by our awards jury.

June 12th Lecture: Rodna Taylor will present "Riding the Rails with Rodna." She was a Zephyrette on the California Zephyr in the 1950s and has fabulous stories and artifacts. (She also played a Zephyrette in "Sudden Fear" with Joan Crawford.) Ms Taylor's delightful recounting of her experiences is not to be missed.

Thursday Lecture Series: 7:30 pm at Chapel of the Chimes, 4499 Piedmont Ave. OHA members $8. Non-members $10.
